These are things you scan yourself — your own cup, your own bag. Point the camera at one and hold the button while you walk around it.

When off, the app stays quiet until a card is tapped. Some children find constant speech tiring; tapping a card always speaks either way.
Voices differ a lot — some say "chair" as "share", which is worse than useless when a child is learning to say the word. Try a few and pick the clearest. Better voices can be downloaded in Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content > Voices. A recording of a real voice beats all of them.

If it has stopped recognising things, work down this list — the first one is free and fixes the most common cause. Only the middle one loses anything.
Clear fingerprints keeps every word, photo, symbol and recording. It only throws away the numbers the app works out from them, which are then worked out again next time. A word that was renamed, or photos that were swapped, can leave those numbers describing the old thing — this is the fix for that, and it costs nothing but a few seconds.
Delete everything returns the device to how it arrived: no words, no photos, no recordings. Use it to prove whether a problem is in the words that were added or in the app itself. It will offer a backup file first if anything has not been saved, and it cannot be undone.
Clear the model throws away the downloaded recognition engine, not the child's words. Use it if recognition never starts at all. About 90MB comes back down the next time, so do it on wifi.

If the child already uses a different symbol set at school, use that instead — Upload image on any word accepts symbols you are licensed for.
Searched separately, because symbol libraries only know plain words — "Dad's cup" finds nothing, "cup" finds the card. Use the set the child already knows; if that is Widgit, PCS or Makaton, upload theirs instead of searching here.
